Search Term Analysis

Which search terms are burning money, which are worth scaling, and which reach you through more than one campaign or target.

Money Burned

Settled spend — clicks older than the 7-day attribution window, whose sales are final — on search terms with enough clicks and no attributed sale, plus the settled spend above the modeled break-even ACoS on terms that do sell. The wave stops where the attribution window begins.

Terms Worth Scaling

Search terms with at least 3 orders and an ACoS under their campaign's Target ACoS, with nothing holding a scale-up. The wave is their daily ad-attributed sales.

Competing Search Terms

Search terms that reached the account through two or more targets in the period. The amount is what the other paths spent beyond what their sales would have cost at the lead path's ACoS — an estimate that assumes the lead path would have won those sales at its own ACoS. The wave is the other paths' daily spend.

Above the lead path's ACoS $39.47

Answers for the last 30 days

Each answer links to the evidence behind it.

  • Which search terms are burning money?

$59.97 of $1,062.60 settled search-term spend (5.6%) earned no profit: 2 terms with no sales and 1 above break-even ACoS, judged on clicks older than 7 days.

  • Which search terms are worth scaling?

15 terms convert below Target ACoS with room to grow; 5 of them run in a campaign near its daily budget, so confirm the budget over several days.

  • Which paths compete for the same search term?

5 search terms reach you through more than one target; the other paths spent $39.47 more than their sales would have cost at the lead path's ACoS (an estimate).

Judged on settled clicks (Aug 26–Sep 17): older than the 7-day attribution window, so their attributed sales are final. The last 7 days appear under each number and are not counted yet.

These terms have no sale or sell above break-even in the period, but their settled clicks do not reach the minimum (20 clicks and $20.00 spend) or do not show the loss. Acting now would judge them on too little traffic, or on sales that are still arriving.

How this analysis works

  • Rows come from the synthetic Sponsored Products search term report (the Amazon Ads spSearchTerm report, grouped by search term): one row per customer search term and the campaign, ad group and target it matched. A term appears in the report only after it received a click. Sales and orders are the 7-day attributed columns (sales7d, purchases7d) Amazon uses for seller Sponsored Products; attribution for a day stays incomplete until its 7-day window has passed.
  • Burning money is judged on settled clicks only — the ones older than 7 days, whose sales can no longer change. A term counts once those clicks reach the Negative Targeting rule’s safeguards (20 clicks and $20.00 spend). The chance of zero orders assumes the term converts like its target (or, when the target has no orders, its campaign) on the same days.
  • Worth scaling needs 3 orders below Target ACoS over the whole period; sales still arriving can only lower that ACoS. The CPC ceiling is average order value × conversion rate × Target ACoS. A suggested bid is the current bid × ceiling ÷ CPC — it assumes the CPC moves with the bid, so watch the CPC after a change — and never exceeds the 20% global safety limit per change. A campaign at 95% of its daily budget on 3 of the last 7 days holds the scale-up; on fewer days it is only a signal, because Amazon may spend up to twice the daily budget on one day.
  • Competing paths groups identical customer search terms across targets. The query’s clicks, spend and results are split between different bids, so each path learns from only part of it, and a weaker path keeps buying clicks a stronger one converts better. Amazon credits each conversion to one ad interaction only, so the paths’ results do not double-count. The lead path has the lowest ACoS among converting paths; the amount above it is an estimate that assumes the lead path would have won the same sales at its own ACoS.
  • Search terms are never bid on directly: a bid change applies to the target and every search term it matches. A negative keyword (exact or phrase) applies to its whole ad group or campaign and can take up to 72 hours to take effect; a product-page “search term” (an ASIN) is blocked with a negative product target instead.
